Communication as a scientific discipline is quite young. In Spain, for example, it has only been fourdecades since the first communication faculties were opened. Therefore, we lack solid longitudinal studies on its evolution, a situation exacerbated by the limitations of official statistics. At present, therefore, the construction of the history of this discipline has been
based on theoretical essays (Martínez-Nicolás, 2006,2008).
